{Hair Inspiration} Pin Curls

Pin Curls are a MUST-know, if you are learning how to create vintage hairstyles. Though many vintage hairstyles can be reproduced with different curling methods for a similar effect, they can never truly produce the result Pin Curls have.

Furthermore, once you have mastered the (dying) art of Pin Curls, you will find that they are actually easier to work with than that of other curling methods, have longer-lasting hold and endless possibilities for glamorous hairstyles.

Written video tutorials

You Will Need:
Bobby pins and hair product with strong hold (I use Garnier Fructis Hair putty)
  • Step 1. It is best to work with lightly damp hair. Dry hair is fine as well, but will lend less curl (the upside is, there wont be as much waiting time). Wet hair will take hours upon hours to dry, so it is not suggested. Washing your hair prior or using a wet brush as you go will do fine.
  • Step 2. Create a center or side-part, your choice. (I usually center-part my hair, weather I leave it centered or side-part it later - to create volume)
  • Step 3. Tie one side into a pigtail, and leave aside (this is just to remove it from your way). Part the remaining hair into two sections - one above the other and tie the upper section into a pigtail or bun (also, just to keep it from way).
  • Step 4. With the remaining lower bit of hair, begin by taking a small (roughly 2") section and coating the ends with putty or gel (I always start with the front of my hair, near my face). Then carefully make a loop with the ends, and while holding the loop in place, roll it up following the strands of hair (to about eye-level).
  • Step 5. Pin in place with two bobby-pins, one crossing over the other. Wah-la! Your first Pin Curl.
space spaceTip: The most important aspect of a Pin Curl, is that the ends are kept within the curl. Also, make sure that the curl is nice and round, so later it wont by oddly shaped when let down.
  • Step 6. Continue with that section of hair, mimicking your first pin-curl and try to keep the amount of hair even. Once finished, let down the upper section and Pin Curl just the same.
  • Step 7. Sort-of like a mirrored effect, do the same with the hair on the opposite side (originally the first pigtail). All of the curls should be facing the same direction, apart from where they meet at the hair-part.
Once all finished, simply wait for the hair or product to dry. If you are sleeping in pin curls, which is what I tend to do, wrap a scarf around your head. A scarf will not only make you more comfortable as you sleep, but will also help keep the curls in place.

Good luck!

Your tutorials are magnificent and so easy to follow. Most of the time, when I try to watch tutorials on hairstyles, mine ends up looking like a matted Q-tip! This worked wonderfully for me, thank you =)!

Thank you! :) Will definitely try this.

Do you find your husband gives you weird looks when you sleep with curls in? Mine always thinks I'm mad. :)

Tonight is my second night attempting the pin curl. I love love love how it looks, and desperately want to emulate those beautiful vintage stars. I have the perfect hair to do this, but my only problem is making the loops and rolling it up! I don't know why but I find it so hard and it always sort of unravels and just doesn't go up perfectly---so mine are always messy. Do you have any tips?
Anywho, thank you!

Thank you so much! I'm just learning about vintage hairstyles, and it seems like everything involves pincurls but doesn't explain what those are. The video and instructions were really helpful. I'm off to try it now.

I've got a quick question on (almost) all of the vintage hairstyles... Do you think they would look good with a frou too? :s :)

Thankies! :D

I always used to side part my hair at the start when I do my curls and then get upset that there is no volume to it.

You've just made my bad hair days fewer :-) Thanks

I recently found your YouTube videos and love them. However, I keep ending up with big, fluffy hair when I brush out the pincurls. I eventually get it in the right sort of shape, but it's still very big. My hair is about shoulder length.

I am using a round, vented brush simliar to this: http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100315&navAction=jump&navCount=2&skuid=sku3790453&id=prod3791604

Any advice is appreciated!

I love your tutorials Aya. I shall be having a go at pincurls myself very soon, and have given you a mention on my blog, so that when I mess up, everyone can see how is should be done LOL

love your page doll! you are just as cute as a button! I have a pin curl tip. After several frustrated attempts to make them with my fingers, I ended up rolling my hair around an almost empty roll of kitchen plastic wrap, near the end, and pulling off and pinning up. The ends are perfectly tucked!

I'm sooo happy I found your site. I have semi-long hair for the first time ever, and for the first time in my 42 years (DON'T LAUGH!) I feel confident in trying new styles. I kind of messed up my pin curls the first time. They were frizzy, but my husband LOVED it anyway. Vintage really does rock. It's like Virginia Madsen's character in "Sideways". A house dress and (non-frizzy) pin curls are just plain sexy! Thank you!! You're a real beauty AND a sweetheart!

About The Name

One might associate the word "Koi" with a beautiful fish, but yet another meaning for the word, is "love"; a deep and passionate love, perhaps, like my passion for vintage-style.
